Quick start — your first 10 minutes

Add your first student

Go to Students and click Add student. Enter their name and grade, plus guardian contact, RGR program and starting unit, session frequency, and any known reading challenges. Only the name is required — you can fill the rest in later.

Log your first lesson

Open Log a Lesson and pick the student, program, unit and session — the unit's ROOTS plan loads. Enter each part as number correct out of number total, including the cold and hot reads of the decodable. When you save, a green bar gives you a button straight to that student's record.

Record an assessment

In Assessments, choose the right tab (Diagnostic, Formative, Progress, or Annual) and click Record. Annual assessments also capture grade equivalent and percentile rank.

Share progress with a parent

Open Reports, choose the student, flip on Parent view to see exactly what they'll see, then click Share with parent to create a read-only link. No parent login required — and you can revoke it any time.

Where do my logged lessons go?

A lesson you save is stored against that student. It shows up in four places, and you never have to hunt for it:

Don't see a lesson you thought you saved? Check Activity Log (under Your Account). It records every save, edit and deletion with the date, the time, who did it and which student's file it touched — so you can tell the difference between "it never saved" and "it was changed later."

Common questions

Do parents need an account?

No. A parent report is a read-only link. Anyone with the link can view that one student's report — nobody can log in, see other students, or change anything. You can revoke a link at any time from Settings.

Is my students' data private to me?

Yes. Every record is tied to your account. Another tutor using KlickTutor cannot see your students, lessons, assessments, or notes — the separation is enforced at the database level, not just in the interface.

What if I make a mistake in a lesson or assessment?

Everything is editable. Open the student's page and use the pencil icon on any lesson or assessment to change it, or the trash icon to delete it.

What happens when a student finishes?

Archive them from their student page. They come off your active roster and dashboard counts, but their full record is preserved and can be restored any time.

Can I get my data out?

Yes. Export any student's complete record — every lesson and assessment — to CSV from their page, and print any report cleanly.

Where did the lesson I just logged go?

Into that student's record. The green bar after you save has a button that opens it, the student's recent lessons are listed under the form, and the full history is on the student's page under "Lessons". If it isn't there, check the Activity Log — it records every save.

What's the difference between a cold and a hot read?

Cold is the first read of a text she has never seen; hot is the same text again after practice. Both are one-minute probes, so the words she reads correctly IS the words-per-minute. Cold is what the progress graphs and the grade-level comparison use, because published reading norms are measured on unpracticed reads — scoring a practiced read against them would make every child look further ahead than they are. Hot shows what the practice bought.

Do I type percentages anywhere?

No. Enter the number correct and the number total — for games, comprehension, spelling and both reads — and KlickTutor works out the percentage and keeps both numbers.

Does the parent email send by itself?

Not today. Saving a lesson writes the email into the preview panel; you press Copy to paste it wherever you like, or Open in email to launch your mail app with it filled in. You still send it yourself.
